Double LL Club

A day at the Hollycombe rally

Here is a nice report that we have received from Mike Jeavons on his time spent at the Hollycombe Rally on the 9th June…

HOLLYCOMBE  2012.

Ted and I arrived at the Double LL rally at Hollycombe on a sunny Saturday morning in his Minor drophead. Thankfully, he hadn’t put the hood down for the journey so I didn’t look like Ken Dodd on a bad hair day. There were already some member’s cars on display as well as quite a few bygone displays in tents and awnings. With military vehicles at the top of the field, a number of tractors, some motorcycles and lots of stationary engines there was plenty to look at.

By eleven, the club had a very good turnout of exhibits on show, with cars turning up on a regular basis. Nice to see opposites from the 50’s, with a pink Edsel Ranger and a bright red Bond Minicar in attendance. The Volvo 1800 Coupe has always been a favourite of mine, the silver blue one on display was in superb condition.

After chatting to lots of old friends, many of whom I hadn’t seen since last year due to my current eye problem, I did a tour of the rally site with my camera, mindful of Wendy’s “I expect lots of photo’s for the web site” comment.

Having done my duty, I strolled down to the café, where I indulged in an excellent plate of fish and chips. Ted joined me whilst I drank my coffee and we had a wander around the steam fairground before boarding the train, along with Dave, Ken and Paul. As usual this meant sensible conversation was somewhat lacking during the train trip, but there was a lot of laughter.

I enjoyed my day at Hollycombe; it’s a very interesting place with plenty to look at, the LL rally adding to that. There did see to be rather a lack of public coming up to the top field to look at the exhibits, despite the new train halt where people could get off right alongside the field. Perhaps I missed it, due to my poor eyesight at present, but I didn’t see any signs down by the main building saying that the LL were displaying there.

I hope it wasn’t too wet on the Sunday for those members staying in caravans and tents, it certainly was here in Havant from late morning onwards. The photo’s I took appear elsewhere on the web site, hope you like them.

PS  I get my first “New eye” in an op on the 25th June, so will soon be able to attend the rest of the 2012 LL events, with my camera of course.
